Ichirizuka
Ichirizuka were markers placed at one ri (about 2.44 miles) intervals to mark the distance from Nihonbashi, the starting point of the Nakasendo and other official highways in Edo. Each marker consisted of two mounds on either side of the highway and usually had trees planted on top. Visible from considerable distances in the Edo period, the few that remain are now often obscured by forest or urban development. Ichirizuka were set up by an edict of 1604, but had largely fallen into disuse and neglect by the end of the 18th century.
